Quite a fascinating story can be found at that iPhone link.  Basically, the glass shattered on impact on his iPhone; he brilliantly placed clear packing tape over the screen, and amazingly enough…his iPhone still works.

Not only that, but a fellow Twitterer, Artifex, pointed him to this "how to" guide on replacing the screen.
